Kaycee Ware Thomas, mezzo-soprano, has a unique and diversified training and performing career. Having received Bachelor of Music degrees in both voice and oboe performance from the University of Oklahoma, Ms. Thomas graduated as the 2004-2005 Outstanding Senior of the Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts. While at OU, Kaycee’s primary teachers were Donna Cox and Marilyn Horne (Visiting Instructor). She went on to receive her Master of Music in oboe performance from the University of Michigan, while studying voice with Freda Herseth and coaching with Martin Katz in fulfillment as a Fulbright finalist for studies in Paris, France. Through these studies, Ms. Thomas was searching to further link her pedagogical approaches and performance practices of both the voice and oboe in order to enhance one another.
Ms. Thomas has performed a variety of repertoire from trouser roles such as Prince Orlofsky and Annio to girly and flirtatious roles such as Dorabella in Così fan tutte. In addition, she has played the villain, Marcellina, in The Marriage of Figaro and Mother Marie, a nun, in The Dialogues of the Carmelites. Other notable roles include Carrie Pipperidge, Carousel, La Soeur aînée, Les Malheurs d’Orpheé, Romeo, Capulleti et Montague, Ursule, Beatrice et Benedict, Fidalma, Il Matrimonio Segreto. and Mary O’Fallin in the world premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon’s Morning Star.
Kaycee has held apprenticeships at the Seagle Music Colony, Amarillo Opera, Opera in the Ozarks, the MasterWorks Festival, and Light Opera of Oklahoma. Recently, Ms. Thomas was featured as mezzo soloist with the Strings on the Bay chamber music series (in the upper peninsula of Michigan), singing Barber’s Dover Beach.
Ms. Thomas’ extensive training and experience as a singer and oboist have molded her into a voice teacher with innovative pedagogical philosophies. Kaycee firmly believes in maintaining a healthy approach to vocal technique. She teaches with a bel canto vocal style, focusing on proper breathing and posture. Ms. Thomas offers coaching for singing in French, German, Italian, and English. She trains all students classically, although she encourages her students to sing more than just classical music.
