Originally from China, violinist Hong-Yi Mo joined the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in October 2008.
Mr. Mo was the second prize winner of the China National Junior Violin Competition in 1994, and the winner of China National Invitational Violin Competition in 1997. He made his solo debut with Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra in China, and released a solo recording with China National Youth Symphony, and later he was invited to give solo performance in State Guest House of China.
Mo began playing violin at age of 4, and entered the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing at age of 13. While studying in Central Conservatory, he received the Excellent Specialty Price of Academic Year twice. In 2000, he moved to the States entering the Oberlin Conservatory of Music studying with Taras Gabora and Milan Vitek, where he earned her Bachelor’s Degree with Full Tuition Award, and Yale University with Syoko Aki earning his Master’s degree with Full Scholarship. Prior to joining the DSO, Mr. Mo was a student of New York Philharmonic Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow and Associate Principle Lisa Kim at the Manhattan School of Music Orchestral Program, where he received Helen F. Whitaker Fund String Initiative Scholarship. He received both scholarship and fellowship from Music Academy of the West and Bowdoin International Music Festival.
Mr. Mo had worked with distinguished musicians such as Martin Chalifour, David Kim, David Chan, Ani Kavafian, Gerard Poulet, Kurt Sassamannhaus, Salvatore Accardo, the American String Quartet, Mendelssohn String Quartet, and the Tokyo String Quartet.
As both a soloist and orchestra musician, Mr. Mo gave solo performances through out Europe, South American and the US. Highlighted of his solo performances, Mr. Mo gave a solo recital of all Six Ysaye Solo Sonatas in Casalmaggorie International Festival in Italy, later he repeated the same program in Oberlin Conservatory. During school, he served as concertmaster of China National Youth Orchestra, Oberlin Contemporary Ensemble, Manhattan School of Music Symphony, and Manhattan School of Music Chamber Sinfonia. In 2008, he led the MSM Chamber Sinfornia perform in Carnigie Hall with Violinist Vivian Hagner and Pinchas Zukerman. He served as associate concertmaster in Maestro Kurt Masur Conductor Seminar in NYC.
Mr. Mo was appointed as guest violin professor in Dominique Republic National Conservatory of Music and also in Beijing Capital Normal University Music College.
