Fingers on Fire: American Strings (ages 9+)

June 18th-22rd, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT; A week for beginning to intermediate string players to explore the richness of the American music tradition and fearlessly dive into their creative potential! Campers will develop a deep understanding of the many exciting and diverse opportunities that exist in music and gain several fun skills, such as improvisation and arranging, that are increasingly necessary for success in the current musical world. The electrifying duo, The Moxie Strings, and Saline's original fiddler, Sarah Lenhart will stand before students as the illustration of these ideas. The final performance will have the students joined by the renowned Saline Fiddlers! This camp is brimming with authenticity and pure American spirit!

LOUIS ARMSTRONG: A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN

JULY 17, 19, 23, 25, 27/ 7:00-9:00PM

ALL LEVELS AND ALL INSTRUMENTS WELCOME!

We’ll study the early work of this great Jazz musician, examining Armstrong’s New Orleans beginnings and his travel to Chicago and ultimately to New York. Listening and analyzing recordings with Bessie Smith, King Oliver, Fletcher Henderson, Earl “Fatha” Hines and his first recordings as a leader, the Hot Fives and Sevens which are the stuff of legend. Topics will include improvisation based on the melody and evolving into a more abstract art form, and collective improvisation in the traditional New Orleans/Chicago style band.

SWINGIN’ WITH SINATRA: INTERPRETING THE AMERICAN POPULAR SONGS OF THE BIG BAND ERA

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL. ALL INSTRUMENTS AND VOCALS WELCOME!

We'll examine how show tunes and tin-pan alley songs became jazz standards with special attention to some that Frank Sinatra made famous along with the Harry Jmaes and Tommy Dorsey Orchestras and his early successes as a leader.  Topics will include interpreting melodies loke a vocalist, whether you are singing or playing a wind, string or percussion instrument, how lyrics dictate the phrasing of a melody, and arranging standards for jazz combo performance.

HORACE SILVER: SMALL GROUP JAZZ COMPOSER

FOR INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED PLAYERS.

There is so much great music written and arranged by Horace Silver, it would take years to cover it all. As we only have five days, we’ll pick several pieces and dig in deep. No matter how challenging harmonically or melodically, Horace’s music always had a deep groove…special emphasis will be placed on mastering that groove.
